To date, I am still unable to determine which device this was, where this came from, why this happened AND why pfSense did not block this. All the IPs it was broadcasting to started with 0.53.X.X.

Jun 18, 2010 · Same thing happened to me. GUI update failed. I received the "Unable to check for updates" message from GUI home page. I enabled SSH. Logged in. Chose upgrade from menu and it worked. Updates are like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get. Navigate to System > Updates. Set Branch to Previous stable version. Wait a few moments for the upgrade check to complete. Optional: Confirm that the latest version of pfSense-upgrade is present using pkg-static info-x pfSense-upgrade. For example, it should be at version >= 0.70 for pfSense 2.4.5-p1.
